Off Center

As a young Pat Flanagan, I would catch the train into RMIT for trade school. It was a rather novel trip after recently moving to Melbourne. The rusty and unusual shapes of the railroad infrastructure often got me thinking about sculpture. I remember seeing a railway spring clip up close and thinking, what a cool shape and there must be millions of them somewhere. After collecting a few milk crates full, I made Off Center in the backyard of my Port Melbourne share house using a string line, chalk, and a humble arc welder.
